Disney Plus tries to detect and ban VPNs, which can lead to error codes. Find out how to fix your Disney Plus VPN and continue watching videos from anywhere in this guide to using a VPN with Disney+.

Most countries around the world now have access to Disney Plus. Only a handful of nations cannot access it, including Bulgaria, China, Greece, Israel, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, and Vietnam. If you’re in one of these countries, you can use a VPN to unblock Disney Plus from anywhere.

If you don’t live in those countries, Disney Plus still has region locks based on where you are located. For example, if you’re in the US you cannot currently watch 27 Dresses or The Last Duel, but you can in the UK. A VPN enables you to access geo-locked Disney content that is unavailable in your country.

If you’re in the US, you can use a VPN to access Star, which is the international version of Hulu, with content from ABC, 20th Century Studios, and FX. Unlike the US, Star comes as part of the cheaper, standard package in Europe, so you can get more bang for your buck by using a VPN to subscribe to the international version of Disney Plus.

But not all VPNs work with Disney Plus. Some VPNs will trigger error codes and connection issues, and you may experience the message: “there seems to be an error connecting to Disney+.”

EXPERT TIP: The easiest way to fix your Disney Plus VPN and access Disney content from anywhere is to switch to a VPN that works reliably. We recommend Surfshark.

How to Fix a VPN Not Working With Disney+

Upon launch, Disney claimed that its streaming service was “VPN proof.” That’s not the case, but Disney does try to detect and block IP addresses associated with VPNs.

If your VPN is being detected, you’ll see a message that reads “Service unavailable. Disney+ is not available at your location.”

Disney+ tries to detect and block VPNs.

If you’re encountering an error code or message while using a VPN, there are a number of steps you can take to fix it, beginning with the most simple:

1. Switch VPN servers

Changing your server is a quick and easy way to resolve a Disney+ connection issue.

Disney+ tries to detect and ban VPN connections, so switching servers to an undetected one can fix the problem.

You won’t know which will work, so there might be some trial and error involved.

Good VPNs get around streaming region blocks by offering thousands of updated servers that are designed to avoid detection. Surfshark, for example, manages to avoid Disney Plus blocks on all of its servers.

2. Clear browser cookies and cache

Websites can collect location data through cookies and cached files. If you’re encountering an error code when using Disney Plus, like Error Code 22 or 31, it could be because the service has detected your real geo-location based on these web identifiers.

Connecting to a VPN server does not remove cookies. You have to delete them from your browser.

Here’s how you clear your cache in Google Chrome:

  1. Open Google Chrome. Click the three dot icon at the top-right of the window.
  2. Select More Tools > Clear browsing data, then from the drop-down menu select All time.
  3. Check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  4. Tap Clear data.
  5. Relaunch Google Chrome and head to the Disney+ website.

How to clear cookies and cache in Safari:

  1. Open Safari. Open the Safari menu and tap Preferences.
  2. Click the Privacy tab > Manage Website Data.
  3. Type Disney into the search bar, select it, then click Remove.
  4. Relaunch Safari and head to the Disney+ website.

You can remove your Disney Plus cookies and cache via Safari preferences.

If you’re watching Disney Plus on Android or iOS you have to restart your mobile device to clear cookies and cache.

Alternatively, your browser’s incognito mode provides a private browsing window that removes most forms of online tracking, too.

3. Test for IP and DNS leaks

Disney Plus won’t work if your VPN is leaking data.

Sometimes DNS requests and real IP addresses fall outside the encrypted VPN connection, revealing your true location and triggering Disney Plus Error Code 22 or 73.

This happens more with free VPNs. The best VPNs have leak protection built into their service.

You should check to see if this is happening by using a leak test tool.

You can test whether a VPN has leaks that reveal your true location.

If your VPN is leaking, check to see whether there are leak protection features in your VPN’s settings, and ask your VPN provider what can be done. Otherwise, we suggest using another, safer VPN service.

4. Restart your device & router

It’s a simple trick, but it remains one of the most effective: restarting your Disney Plus device and the router/modem can resolve Disney Plus error messages, particularly login problems and Error Code 83.

This can also help with your internet connection to ensure you’re getting the best speeds for streaming.

5. Consult your VPNs support

One of the quickest ways to troubleshoot a problem with your Disney Plus VPN is by contacting the VPN service’s support team.

A customer support agent will be able to recommend the best VPN servers to access Disney Plus, or tell you if the service is experiencing any technical issues.

Most top VPNs have 24/7 live chat support, which is by far the easiest way to get assistance.

In the video below, we contacted a Surfshark support agent and he quickly recommended a number of servers to watch US Disney+ from.

6. Disable IPv6 connections

IPv6 is still not supported by most VPNs. If your router is using an IPv6 address, this can lead to exposures of your real location and Disney Plus showing your usual local library.

You can check for these leaks by using our IPv6 leak test tool.

A select few VPNs block IPv6 traffic altogether to prevent this, like ExpressVPN, but you can rule out IPv6 leaks entirely by disabling them on your device.

How to disable IPv6 on Windows:

  1. Open Network & Internet settings.
  2. Select Network & Sharing Center > Properties.
  3. Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).

How to disable IPv6 on Mac:

  1. Open System Preferences and click Network.
  2. Click Advanced in the bottom right. Click the TCP/IP tab.
  3. Click the dropdown menu next to Configure IPv6 and choose Off.
  4. Click Ok > Apply.

You can switch off IPv6 connections on macOS via Network settings.

7. Use Smart DNS

Smart DNS is a useful tool for those looking to stream Disney Plus outside permissible regions. It routes your internet connection through a proxy DNS server, enabling you to access Disney Plus from anywhere without connecting to a VPN server.

VPNs like Surfshark and NordVPN provide Smart DNS services. Because you are changing your DNS settings, Smart DNS allows you to stream Disney Plus from large home screen devices with ease, like Smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and games consoles.

All the VPNs we recommend come with quality Smart DNS tools that are easy to set up.

8. Get a better VPN for Disney Plus

If all else fails, it’s likely that your Disney Plus issue comes from using the wrong VPN. Even if you’ve attempted all the above workarounds, not all VPNs work with Disney Plus. Some don’t prioritize streaming, while others lack the technology to unblock the service.

The most effective fix for Disney Plus is to get a dependable VPN, with a track record smoothly accessing the service.

Our tests show that Surfshark is the best VPN for accessing Disney Plus. It’s consistent, comes with a user-friendly Smart DNS, helpful customer support, and a cost-effective price tag.

How to Watch Disney+ from Anywhere With a VPN

If you already have a Disney+ subscription account you don’t need a VPN to continue watching content overseas. The service will automatically detect that you’re in another country and offer local content.

But that’s only if the place you’re travelling to also has Disney+. If you want to watch Disney+ in a country that doesn’t yet have it, you need to use a VPN.

With a VPN you can change your IP address and make it look like you’re using the internet from another country. Connecting to a VPN server allows you to access Disney Plus from countries where it’s not available.

Alongside a VPN, you’ll need to create an account by using a payment method registered in a country that has access to Disney Plus. If you don’t have a foreign payment method, you can still get Disney Plus by following these instructions.

Here’s a short guide to accessing Disney Plus from anywhere in the world:

  1. Subscribe to a VPN with a history of unblocking Disney Plus abroad. You’ll need to pay with a credit card registered in a country that has access to Disney Plus or use a gift card workaround.
  2. Download, install, and launch the VPN software on your chosen device(s).
  3. Connect to a VPN server in a country that has access to Disney Plus. You can find a complete list here.
  4. Open the Disney Plus website or app, sign in with your account details, and stream movies and TV shows like The Book of Boba Fett and Hawkeye.

How to Get Disney Plus without a Foreign Credit Card

Even if you’re in a country that doesn’t have Disney Plus, you can still create an account to stream the service. The simplest way is to get a VPN and sign up using a payment method registered in a country that does have Disney+.

If this isn’t an option for you, you can still get around it. There are two methods:

Method 1: Get an Apple App Store Gift Card

  1. On your iOS device, head to Settings > Apple ID and sign out of any existing Apple ID account. The Sign Out option is at the bottom of the Apple ID page.
  2. You need to create a brand new Apple ID from scratch. Go to the App Store and tap Account. Tap the option to Create New Apple ID.

‘Create New Apple ID’ is found under ‘Account’ in the App Store.

  3. Enter your email address and generate a secure password. You also need to change the listed country. Tap where you see your country listed.

You need to change your country when creating your new Apple ID.

  4. Select your Country or Region as the United States, or any country that has access to Disney+.

Select the US or any other region with Disney+.

  5. Once completed, you will be asked to insert payment details that match the country you have selected. Select None and enter a random US address.

Do not insert any payment details and enter a random US address.

  6. A verification code will be sent to the email address you provided. Enter this code when prompted. This will confirm the creation of your new Apple ID account.
  7. You won’t be able to add funds to your Apple ID without a foreign payment method, so you need to get an App Store & iTunes gift card. Connect your VPN to the US and head directly to the Apple Store. Search for Apple Store Gift Cards and tap Email a gift card.

You can purchase an iTunes gift card via the Apple website.

  8. Enter an amount that covers the Disney Plus subscription you wish to sign up for and send it to the email you used to create your new Apple ID account.

Enter the appropriate amount to purchase a Disney+ subscription.

  9. Once you’ve received the email with the gift card attached, head back to the App Store and tap Redeem Gift Card or Code.

Redeem Gift Card or Code option appears after setting up your new account.

  10. Tap Enter Code Manually and insert the code. Once done, the gift card will be added to your account.

Enter the gift card code manually after it is sent to your email.

  11. Go back to the App Store, download the Disney+ app, and and sign up for an account.

    Disney+ has two subscription plans.

  12. Disney+ will automatically take payment from your gift card. With this done, you’ll now be able to login on any device with the same account information and stream Disney+ from anywhere.

You can use your account information to login to any device compatible with Disney+.

Method 2: Use a Google Play Gift Code

If you don’t own an Apple device, you can also unblock Disney+ on any Android device with access to the Google Play Store.

  1. Use a VPN to connect to a country with access to Disney Plus.
  2. While connected to the VPN server, create a new Google account. To do this, go to your device Settings menu.
  3. Scroll down and tap Google. Now, select the small arrow beside your current account.
  4. You’ll now see the option to Add Another Account. Tap that and fill out the required details to create a new Google account.
  5. Once done, purchase a Google Play gift code that will give you local currency, as foreign currencies won’t be accepted. For example, if you’re using a VPN to connect to the UK, you need a gift card in British Pounds. These can be bought using the local website, like Amazon.co.uk.
  6. You’ll receive the gift code via email. Either click the link provided in the email or key the code into the Google Play Store to redeem it.
  7. Don’t be put off by the requirement to enter a valid zip code, as Google does not verify whether you live there. Just look one up on Google Maps – any real zip code will do.
  8. With your new Play Store account and your redeemed gift card, simply search for and install the Disney Plus app and sign in as normal.
  9. Choose to pay for Disney Plus with your US Google account balance and sign in.

And that’s it. From now on, whenever you connect to a US VPN server, you can stream Disney Plus from anywhere in the world.

How To Watch Disney Plus Content That’s Not Available in Your Country

Even if you’re in a country that has access to Disney Plus, the service is still region locked. In other words, where you are determines what content you’re allowed to watch. For example, Canada and Australia cannot access FX content on Disney Plus.

Compared to Netflix, the differences in Disney Plus’ regional content aren’t huge – flagship IPs from Star Wars and Marvel are available to all. But there are some geo-restrictions because of licensing agreements that Disney still has in place with other streaming sites.

Once you discover where the missing content is available, you can stream it by connecting your VPN to a server in the same country.

As you can see in the video below, we used Surfshark VPN to access the movie 27 Dresses, which was available on the UK’s Disney Plus library but not on the US one.

The biggest regional difference is with the Star content hub, which is unavailable to most of the world, including the US, which you can read more about below.

Can You Watch Star in the US?

In February 2021 Disney Plus added the Star content hub for Australasia, Canada, Europe, and the UK – an international version of Hulu, which remains exclusive to the US and Japan (unless you use a Hulu VPN).

This includes 100s of new films and TV shows that are considered adult-orientated. Much of it comes from the archives of 20th Century Studios, FX, ABC, and Searchlight Pictures.

Star content is available with a Hulu subscription in the US, where you can sign up to Hulu independently or as part of a Disney Plus bundle deal, which includes ESPN too. However, this costs a lot more than a regular Disney Plus subscription.

Where Star has been rolled out, it is free to access and part of a regular subscription. By changing your IP address a VPN will allow those in the US to access Star/Hulu without paying a dime more, getting more bang for your buck.

Let’s break down the savings: the US bundle package to get Hulu included with Disney Plus costs $13.99/month, which works out as $167.88/year. In contrast, the standard Disney Plus package in Canada, Europe, and the UK, which includes Star/Hulu, costs £79.99/year.

Using a VPN to purchase an international Disney Plus membership offers savings of around $60.00 per year.

Adult content was previously unavailable on Disney+ if you signed up with a US account – capped at TV-14. But now you can set your account to TV-MA and access material without parental control restrictions. This includes titles like Nightmare Alley, Die Hard, and The Last Duel.

It’s worth bearing in mind that Star is similar to Hulu but it is not an exact copy. Disney only owns 67% of Hulu – and this is the content Star users can access (Disney plans to buy out the rest within the next few years). Hulu continues to provide additional licensed content from third parties, like Netflix does.

How to Watch Star from the US

In the video below, you can see how easy it is to access Star when using a VPN:

The Best VPNs That Still Work with Disney Plus in 2022

The best VPNs for Disney Plus bypass geo-blocks consistently and prevent you from ever having to deal with error codes. They come with fast international download speeds, apps for popular devices, a Smart DNS tool, and helpful customer support.

We have tested 70 to see which are the most reliable and bug-free VPNs for Disney Plus. Here are the results:

1. Surfshark: Unblocks Disney Plus On Every Server

PROS CONS
  • Reliable access to Disney+
  • Cost effective VPN
  • Excellent Smart DNS feature
  • Fast speeds for smooth streaming
  • Useful 24/7 live chat support
  • Apps for all popular devices, incl. Fire TV Stick
  • Some servers are slow to connect
  • No IPv6 support

Surfshark unblocks Disney+ on all of its servers.

Surfshark is an excellent VPN for streaming generally, and it’s been the top-rated VPN for Disney Plus since the platform launched.

Surfshark can access Disney Plus on every server in its network. That means you can get around any geo-blocks Disney Plus has in place, or access Star from the US with ease.

It measures fast enough speeds for buffer-free, high quality streaming, and customer support is always on-hand should you encounter any Disney Plus errors. The team are responsive and friendly, and they do an excellent job offering workarounds and troubleshooting tips.

Surfshark doesn’t have a device limit, either. This means that you can watch Disney Plus on as many devices as you want and you won’t encounter Error Code 83 for device compatibility issues. There are apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Fire TV, Apple TV, and router.

You can also reap the benefits of Surfshark’s Smart DNS, which can be set up with ease. We detail how to do this in our guide to using a VPN with HBO Max – which Surfshark also works well with.

This VPN is good for newcomers and experienced users alike. Its apps and interface are user-friendly, and no one will complain about the price tag. Surfshark is high-quality but cheap; it only costs $2.30, which is one of the most competitive price tags on the market.

2. NordVPN: The Fastest VPN for Disney Plus

PROS CONS
  • Consistent Disney Plus access
  • Extremely fast international & local speeds
  • Compatible across devices and platforms
  • Smart DNS for easy Disney Plus streaming
  • Six device allowance
  • No IPv6 support
  • More expensive than Surfshark

NordVPN gets past Disney+ geo-locks.

NordVPN’s strongest feature is its speed. It’s faster than any other VPN no matter where in the world you want to watch Disney Plus from. It’s also one of the safest and most feature-rich VPNs on the market.

As with Surfshark, NordVPN comes with an excellent Smart DNS feature. This enables you to watch Disney Plus without ever connecting to a VPN server.

NordVPN works across all Disney Plus regions, meaning that no content is inaccessible to you, including Star, and it’s compatible across all the major devices and platforms.

We are particularly fond of the Fire TV Stick app, which you can stream Disney Plus from with ease. You can even stream Disney Plus with NordVPN on PlayStation 4 and 5, as well as with Xbox One.

You can also install it on up to six devices, which is a generous number, enabling you to watch Disney Plus from your desktop, phone, TV, and more under one subscription.

It’s slightly more expensive than Surfshark, but its speed and reputation might give it the edge.

3. ExpressVPN: The Best All-Round VPN

PROS CONS
  • Extremely fast network speeds
  • Apps for all Disney Plus compatible devices
  • Smart DNS for reliable streaming
  • Fantastic 24/7 live chat support
  • IPv6 leak protection included
  • One of the most expensive VPNs
  • Five simultaneous device allowance only

ExpressVPN accesses Disney+ and the Star hub.

ExpressVPN offers reliable access to all of the available Disney Plus libraries and the Star content hub. It’s not as reliable as Surfshark and NordVPN have been historically, but there’s no denying its overall impressiveness as a VPN service.

ExpressVPN is one of the fastest, most reliable, and safest VPNs around. We consider it to be the best VPN in 2022, thanks to its large network of 3,000 servers and excellent Smart DNS feature called MediaStreamer.

You can use ExpressVPN on up to five Disney Plus compatible devices. This isn’t as generous as NordVPN or Surfshark, but it’s unlikely you’ll need more, especially if you set it up on the router.

If a server doesn’t work with Disney Plus, you can contact ExpressVPN’s customer support agents, who are some of the best in the business. They’ll quickly tell you which servers to connect to for easy access.

Unlike Surfshark and NordVPN, ExpressVPN has built-in IPv6 leak protection, making it harder for Disney Plus to detect your location.

The drawback is its price, which is $6.67 on its cheapest deal. It’s a worthy investment generally, but you might question the cost if you’re only interested in streaming Star Wars shows on Disney Plus.

Which Free VPN Works With Disney Plus?

You can use Windscribe Free, VPNhub Free, or PrivadoVPN Free to access Disney Plus.

These are the only safe free VPN options that also work with Disney Plus, but none come with Smart DNS and are limited by a 10GB monthly data cap. That means you cannot stream content for long.

Only VPNhub comes with unlimited data. But it is restricted to mobile streaming only.

These free VPNs are useful if you want to test Disney Plus, but we don’t suggest using a free VPN as a long-term solution.
