IPVanish is the very best VPN for Kodi, with great compatibility with all Android-based Kodi devices. It has an excellent app for Fire TV Stick and it also offers an APK file in case your Android device doesn’t have access to the Google Play store.

You can see how well IPVanish works with Kodi in our demonstration video below.

    Fast streaming and torrenting

IPVanish is consistently very fast, especially in the US. It has a large list of no-log servers to choose from, and all of its servers allow torrenting and P2P traffic.

In our tests, we saw average local download speeds of 93Mbps on a 100Mbps connection. This puts it among the fastest VPNs we’ve tested, especially now the VPN supports WireGuard.

IPVanish was also the fastest VPN in our P2P speed tests, returning a 15.6MiB/s bitrate compared to 16.8MiB/ without a VPN.

No IP or DNS leaks on any platform

From a security and privacy standpoint, IPVanish is one of the safest VPNs available. It has a VPN kill switch to prevent your IP from being exposed in case your VPN connection drops.

We have never found any faults in IPVanish’s apps on any platform. Nor have we suffered from an IP address or DNS leak while using IPVanish.

    Not good for streaming

IPVanish doesn’t work with US Netflix or BBC iPlayer, which is a big disappointment. It also lacks 24/7 live chat support, but its customer support team is very responsive and helpful.

If you’re using local media or add-ons that use a P2P connection, though, this won’t be an issue.

All in all, IPVanish is the best choice for Kodi. This is especially true if you’re planning on using Kodi on your Fire TV Stick or Android-based Kodi box.

  2. 2. ExpressVPN: Best Kodi VPN for Privacy

ExpressVPN is a popular VPN for a reason. It’s as reliable as they come and ideal for privacy. The VPN’s fast download speeds make it ideal for Kodi streaming.

    Using ExpressVPN with Kodi

ExpressVPN can be used to access all geo-blocked Kodi add-ons.

Based on 100Mbps local test connection

    Broad device compatibility

Similar to IPVanish, ExpressVPN is highly compatible with Android-based devices. Not only does it come with a very efficient (although simple) Fire TV Stick app, but it also offers an official APK file for devices with no Google Play access.

Disappointingly, ExpressVPN’s Fire TV and Android TV app hasn’t been updated for a TV-sized screen. That said, its Fire TV Stick app is the only one we’ve tested that includes a kill switch.

Like most VPNs, ExpressVPN doesn’t come with a Linux GUI app for LibreELEC. If you run Kodi on LibreELEC, we recommend installing ExpressVPN on your router. Then, use the VPN’s best-in-class router app to configure your settings.

    Secure torrenting

Torrenting is allowed on all of ExpressVPN’s servers, which is crucial as some Kodi add-ons require P2P support. All your activity is protected by AES-256 encryption, a VPN kill switch, and a privacy-first logs policy. Check out our guide to torrenting with ExpressVPN to learn more.

It also helps that ExpressVPN is based in a privacy-friendly jurisdiction — the British Virgin Islands. Put simply, this protects against government agencies getting a hold of your web data.

    Great for streaming

ExpressVPN is our top recommendation for streaming. Using the VPN, you can get around geo-restrictions and access official Kodi streaming add-ons.

There are not many downsides to ExpressVPN apart from the rather expensive month-to-month subscription plan. The Fire Stick TV and Android TV app could also do with a design refresh.

  3. 3. NordVPN: Best Value Kodi VPN

An excellent budget VPN with fast speeds for streaming.

NordVPN is a good choice for Kodi if you want to spend less. While NordVPN is cheaper than IPVanish and ExpressVPN, you won’t be disappointed with how this VPN performs.

    Using NordVPN with Kodi

NordVPN encrypts Kodi traffic for a cheaper price than alternatives.

Cheapest Price$3.71/mo over 2 years See all plans

Based on 100Mbps local test connection

    Logging PolicyNo Logs

Fast speeds for HD Kodi streams

NordVPN’s speeds are very impressive, especially when you connect to a nearby server. The VPN uses WireGuard, which we’ve found tends to be much faster than OpenVPN.

It hasn’t been as fast as IPVanish or ExpressVPN in our P2P speed tests, though, offering a bitrate of 10.8MiB/s compared to 16.8MiB/s with no VPN.

    Secure encryption & DoubleVPN

Not only are NordVPN’s speeds outstanding, but its privacy and security features are equally remarkable. Traffic is encrypted with the unbreakable AES-256 cipher, and your true IP address is always protected by a VPN kill switch. We’ve never detected any IP or DNS leaks that could compromise your privacy.

NordVPN also offers a Double VPN feature, which simply means that your VPN traffic travels through an extra server to hide your activity even further.

Torrenting is blocked on some servers

The main drawback to NordVPN is that not all the servers support P2P for torrenting, as ExpressVPN and IPVanish do. It’s not a big problem, as there are still plenty of compatible servers. But it could cause bottlenecks at busy times.

The VPN also doesn’t provide an APK file for devices that don’t come with the Google Play Store installed. We recommend avoiding the unofficial versions that are available online, as you can’t be sure how safe they are.

  4. 4. ProtonVPN: Best Overall Free Kodi VPN

The only safe free VPN with unlimited data.

    • Fire TV app has to be sideloaded
    • Blocks P2P traffic

ProtonVPN is the best free VPN for Kodi. Unlike all other secure free VPNs, you can use it to watch as much Kodi content as you want. Although it’s slow in some locations and it doesn’t have good support options, ProtonVPN is the best choice if you don’t want to pay for a Kodi VPN.

    Using ProtonVPN with Kodi

ProtonVPN Free doesn’t work with most geo-blocked Kodi add-ons.

    Cheapest PriceFree

Based on 100Mbps local test connection

    Logging PolicyAnonymous Server Usage Data

    4. androidAndroid
    5. linuxLinux
    Data LeaksNo

No data cap & fast download speeds

ProtonVPN Free’s main benefit is that it allows you to use an unlimited amount of data. The other top free Kodi VPNs that we tested, like Hide.me and Windscribe, only allow you to use 10GB of data each month.

ProtonVPN is also faster than other free VPNs. Using our 100Mbps internet connection, we recorded a download speed of 95Mbps while connected to the VPN’s closest server.

The problem is, though, that the free version only has servers in three countries: the US, Netherlands, and Japan. If you’re not close to one of these locations, you’ll likely experience much slower speeds.

Robust encryption & no user logs retained

ProtonVPN Free beats even most premium VPNs on privacy and security features. The VPN uses AES-256 encryption, WireGuard, and blocks IPv6 leaks.

It also has a minimal logging policy. This means that it doesn’t store any data that can be used to identify you by your Kodi activity. The only thing ProtonVPN retains is when you last logged in, which is used to protect your account.

No native Fire TV app & no P2P

Like with all free VPNs, ProtonVPN comes with limitations. First of all, the free VPN doesn’t allow any torrenting traffic. As a result, you won’t be able to use any Kodi add-ons that use P2P.

You’ll also have to sideload the app if you use Fire TV, as it cannot be downloaded through the Amazon app store. Thankfully, ProtonVPN’s Android TV app is easy to install on Nvidia Shield and other Android-based streaming boxes.

  5. 5. Windscribe: Best Free VPN for Kodi Torrents

The only free Kodi VPN that works with torrenting and Netflix.

    • Can be used with P2P Kodi add-ons

    • Unlimited simultaneous connections

    • 10GB monthly data cap
    • Slow download speeds

Windscribe is a good alternative free VPN for Kodi. Unlike ProtonVPN, it is compatible with Kodi add-ons that use torrents. However, it comes with a restrictive 10GB monthly data limit and its speeds are slow.

    Using Windscribe with Kodi

Windscribe Free can unblock BBC iPlayer’s Kodi add-on.

    Cheapest PriceFree

Based on 100Mbps local test connection

Easy-to-use apps for Fire TV and Android TV

Windscribe has native apps for Fire TV and Android TV. The VPN can be easily set up and installed on all popular Kodi boxes.

These apps come with AES-256 encryption, WireGuard, and split tunneling. It’s also one of the best VPN apps for TV we’ve used, with an interface optimized for larger screens.

    Good choice for Kodi torrents

Windscribe is our top-rated free VPN for torrenting. It allows P2P traffic on most of its servers and its torrenting speeds are fast. In our tests, we were able to access every Kodi add-on we tried.

Windscribe is also the only free VPN to work with streaming sites. As a result, you can use Windscribe to stream from legal Kodi add-ons, like DAZN and Crackle.

10GB data cap is not enough

Windscribe imposes a 10GB data cap on free users. This is to encourage upgrades to its premium subscription.

10GB of data will let you stream around four hours of HD content. This is simply not enough if you regularly use Kodi, but is okay for occasional use.

The VPN is also based in Canada, which is part of the Five Eyes data-sharing alliance. Canada has some of the strictest copyright laws in the world, so make sure your kill switch is enabled and, as always, you only stream legal Kodi content.

Why You Need a VPN for Kodi

Here are the two main reasons to use a VPN with Kodi:

1. Hide your Kodi activity from your ISP

Unfortunately, many Kodi add-ons host copyrighted works. Streaming content from these sources is illegal. The problem is that it’s often hard to tell which add-ons contain files that are uncopyrighted, and which ones don’t.

If you accidentally use an illegal Kodi add-on without a VPN, your internet service provider (ISP) can see what you’ve streamed and when. If compelled by law enforcement, your ISP is obliged to pass on this information.

You could be issued a fine, be prevented from accessing Kodi on your network, or even end up in serious legal trouble.

A VPN service prevents this. A VPN encrypts your traffic, changes your IP, and obfuscates your Kodi activity from any third party. As a result, your ISP won’t be able to monitor what you watch on Kodi.

2. Bypass Geo-Restrictions

Some legal streaming services, like BBC iPlayer and DAZN, provide Kodi add-ons. This allows you to watch all your content in the same place.

However, these streaming sites geo-block their content. This means they only allow access to TV shows and movies from people in a specific country. Without a VPN, you won’t be able to access anything that’s outside of your country.

When using a VPN, you can change your IP address by connecting to a proxy server in another country. For example, we were able to access the BBC iPlayer Kodi add-on by connecting to ExpressVPN’s UK server.

A VPN almost certainly won’t speed up your connection. Despite many other VPN publications claiming that ISP speed throttling is common, this hasn’t been true for many years.

How We Test the Best VPNs for Kodi

Every VPN we review for Kodi is subject to the same rigorous scientific testing process. We do this to ensure fair and unbiased rankings.

When we test VPNs for Kodi, we look for the following characteristics:

  • Compatible with streaming devices, including Fire TV Stick
  • Reliably fast speeds
  • No user logs or IP leaks
  • Unlimited bandwidth with no throttling
  • Lots of P2P-compatible servers
  • A kill switch to protect your IP address

Below is a more detailed breakdown of our testing and rating methodology:

1. Device Compatibility: 30%

Minimum Requirement: Can be installed on Amazon Fire TV.
We Recommend: User-friendly app that’s compatible with Fire TV, Android TV, and LibreELEC.

The VPN you choose must be compatible with the device you stream Kodi on. It’s also key that you can easily use your VPN with Kodi.

We download and test Kodi on several Kodi compatible devices and platforms including:

  • FireTV Stick
  • PC
  • Mac
  • Android TV
  • Android
  • Linux (LibreELEC)

Since Kodi is very popular on Fire TV Stick, whether or not a VPN has a good Fire OS app is a key aspect of this rating criteria.

Kodi is most popular on Fire TV Stick and Android-based Kodi boxes. Whether or not a VPN has a good app for these is a key aspect of this rating criteria.

We expect to see these apps designed for easy use. Finding and connecting to servers using a remote needs to be straightforward, and advanced security settings need to be understandable and quick to enable.

2. Logging Policy: 25%

Minimum Requirement: A minimal logging policy and a record of following it.
We Recommend: Zero-logs policy with no record of breaking it.

We read each VPN’s privacy policy from start to finish. Then, we research the VPN company’s history. We do this to check whether, and how, the service stores your usage and account data.

The best VPNs operate a no-logs policy. This means they don’t keep any records of your activity, not even anonymous timestamps or metadata.

We also research torrenting policies, to make sure providers have no record of forwarding DMCA requests to users.

3. Speed: 20%

Minimum Requirement: 60Mbps local download speed & 3MiB/s P2P speed.
We Recommend: 80Mbps local download speed & 7MiB/s P2P speed.

If you plan to use Kodi to stream or torrent, then speed is a really important part of finding the best VPN. A fast VPN is vital for buffer-free streaming.

Local download speed is the most relevant to streaming, so we use it as a benchmark to judge performance on Kodi.

We regularly measure the local download speeds of all VPNs on a standard 100Mbps connection.

Unlike many other speed ratings, this ranking criteria also factors in P2P speed, as some popular Kodi add-ons require a P2P connection.

4. Data Allowance: 15%

Minimum Requirement: 10GB each month for free VPNs, and unlimited for premium VPNs.
We Recommend: Unlimited data with no restrictions.

Almost all free VPNs come with a data cap. Like with most limitations on free VPNs, this is imposed to encourage users to upgrade to a premium subscription.

Data allowance for free Kodi VPNs is particularly important, though, as streaming video uses a lot of bandwidth. For instance, a standard 10GB data allowance only allows you to watch a few hours of content each month.

If you use up your data cap, the rest of your Kodi activity will be outside of the VPN tunnel. Consequently, your ISP can monitor the streams and torrents you access on Kodi.

We check each VPNs data cap policy and try to find ways of claiming extra ‘bonus’ data. For example, if a VPN offers extra data to users with a verified email address.

5. P2P Servers: 5%

Minimum Requirement: At least one P2P server in every region.
We Recommend: P2P servers in every country.

If you want to torrent or use certain add-ons with Kodi, you’ll need to connect to a server that allows P2P traffic.

Some VPNs allow P2P traffic on every server in the network, but most restrict you to dedicated servers.

For the best speeds, you need a VPN with multiple P2P servers in your country or region.

6. Kill Switch: 5%

Minimum Requirement: Includes a working kill switch.
We Recommend: Kill switch on all platforms, including Fire TV.

A kill switch cuts your internet connection when the VPN loses connection. This maintains your anonymity on P2P connections.

Either a VPN has a functioning kill switch or it doesn’t. It’s an absolute must-have for Kodi, though, so it is worth 10% of the total rating.

Most VPNs don’t have a kill switch on Fire TV and Android TV. As these are popular Kodi devices, we heavily reward VPNs that do include a kill switch on these devices.
